North Kivu: the first convoy of the Couloir Vert Kivu-Kinshasa arrives in Kinshasa

Kinshasa - Having set off from Mutsora, in Beni territory (North Kivu), on 4 March 2026, the first convoy of the Couloir Vert Kivu-Kinshasa (CVKK) has arrived in Kinshasa after a journey of several weeks linking the east and west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The convoy was carrying, in particular, locally produced chocolate made from cocoa processed in Mutwanga, as well as beans destined for markets in the west of the country. Part of the cargo had previously been delivered to Kisangani before the rest continued its journey along the Congo River.

Implemented by the Virunga Foundation with support from the European Union, the CVKK is presented as a project aimed at strengthening national economic connectivity and supporting local agricultural and agro-industrial activities. In a region long marked by armed violence and insecurity, this local chocolate production also stands as a symbol of economic and territorial resilience.

This arrival marks an important step towards the goal of further connecting the east and west of the country. But it also raises a key question: what will be the concrete benefits for local communities in the areas traversed? What social, economic and environmental impacts will these corridors have on the populations concerned? Our action research project on development corridors is currently examining these issues.
